A BEQUEST FOR A BETTER FUTURE  

After making sure your family and loved ones are looked after, why not give to a cause that’s important to you through a bequest?  

This kind of donation can be easily included in a will or added to an existing one via codicil. Bequests may be made in cash, securities, real property, or tangible personal property.  

By donating as little as 1% of your estate, you can make a significant difference to your Musée’s projects.  

TYPES OF BEQUESTS  

• Universal legacy: Gift of all assets  
• General legacy: Gift of a share or percentage of assets  
• Particular legacy: Gift of a specific asset (works of art, listed securities, etc.)  
• Residuary legacy: Gift of all assets remaining after any particular or general legacies have been settled

By donating life insurance, you can give the Fondation du MNBAQ a significant gift in a very affordable way, while protecting the value of your estate for your family and loved ones. The amount paid upon your death will exceed the amount invested in premiums during your lifetime.  

WAYS TO DONATE LIFE INSURANCE  

• Designate the Fondation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy and receive a tax receipt for the policy amount  
• Take out a new life insurance policy, irrevocably transfer ownership to the Fondation, and receive a tax receipt for each premium paid  
• Irrevocably transfer ownership of your existing life insurance policy to the Fondation and receive a tax receipt for the policy’s market value

• Invest a nominal amount that can be transformed into a substantial donation  
• Preserve your financial resources during your lifetime

A donation of company shares, bonds, or other financial securities is an altruistic gesture that supports the MNBAQ’s mission and has significant tax advantages.  

ADVANTAGES  

• Receive a tax receipt representing the market value of the securities at the time of donation  
• Pay no capital gain on the difference between the market value of the securities at the time of transfer and the cost of the securities at acquisition  
• Benefit from a simple, straightforward process  
• For example, if you were to donate shares at a fair market value of $10,000, you would receive a tax credit of approximately $2,500 and would be exempt from capital gains tax.

Donating a registered retirement income fund, an RRSP, a registered retirement savings fund, a life income fund, or a locked-in retirement account to the Fondation has significant tax advantages. A tax receipt will be issued for the total amount transferred.  

ADVANTAGES  

• Upon your death, the tax credits will largely offset the taxes owing. You can rest easy knowing where your money is going.  

A charitable annuity is an insurance product that guarantees an income for life or for a predetermined period. Part of the available capital will be used to purchase the annuity, and the other part will constitute your gift to the Fondation.  

ADVANTAGES  

• Guarantee an investment income for life or for a predetermined period  
• Maintain or increase annual disposable income  
• Benefit from a minimal or non-existent tax rate on annuities  
• Avoid worrying about managing capital 

Flow-through shares are found in the mining, oil and gas, and renewable energy sectors. This type of share is issued by a resource company that renounces its right to deduct exploration expenses and instead transfers that right to an investor.  

Flow-through shares can be donated by you as an individual, by your operating company, or by your management company, at a real cost of approximately 4.95%. For example, a donation of $250,000 will cost you approximately $12,500.  

ADVANTAGES  

• Make a major donation at a low cost  
• Receive recognition from the Musée commensurate with your donation 

For this type of donation, selected assets are transferred to a charitable remainder trust. A trustee, either an individual or an entity, is charged with managing the assets. During your lifetime, you are the beneficiary of the income generated by the trust, and upon your death, the capital is transferred to the Fondation as a donation.

• Benefit from a lower tax rate, since the trust is taxed at a lower rate than the personal tax rate  
• Avoid worrying about managing the assets in trust  
• Secure a major donation by making it indisputable in the estate  
• Get a capital gains exemption  
• Benefit from tax advantages during your lifetime  
   

Proposals for artwork donations must be submitted to the MNBAQ before they are analyzed by the Fondation.
