Espace Riopelle
Riopelle’s dream, a new page in the Musée’s history. Learn all about this major transformation project!
The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is opening a new chapter in its history with the creation of the Espace Riopelle,* a pavilion dedicated to Jean Paul Riopelle that will be integrated into the museum complex. To support this transformative project, the Fondation du Musée has launched a major fundraising campaign to which you are all invited to contribute.
*Espace Riopelle is a provisional name. The official name will be announced as soon as it is chosen.
The major campaign, called +D’ART DANS NOS VIES, aims to support the Musée during a crucial phase of its history. It will help bring the Espace Riopelle to life and support the implementation of all related activities. It will also be the driving force behind the creation of the Education Through Art Centre. The impact of this centre, in the heart of the Charles Baillairgé Pavilion, will reverberate throughout the Musée.
Our Musée has long had ties to painter, sculptor, and lithographer Jean-Paul Riopelle. In 1956, we were the first museum to acquire one of his works, and we have been passionately committed to promoting his art ever since.
Today, we house the largest public collection of works by the painter and sculptor. In the 1980s, Riopelle himself dreamed of creating an exhibition space devoted to his own work in what is now the Charles Baillairgé Pavilion. He envisaged his work as part of a dialogue with that of other artists. That dream is set to become a reality in 2026 when the Espace Riopelle opens just a few steps away.
The new pavilion, which will be at the end of Wolfe-Montcalm Avenue overlooking the Plains of Abraham, will replace part of the former Central Pavilion. With its breathtaking views of the river, the building’s exceptional location will reflect the distinctive qualities of Riopelle’s work, particularly its deep connection with nature.
““Nestled in the heart of our complex, the Espace Riopelle will bring our vision of a dynamic, inclusive museum to life. The building’s exceptional location will help make it a place for exploration and reflection while enriching the iconic collection of Jean Paul Riopelle’s work. All contributions are invaluable to creating this space, which will bring our Musée into a future of cultural exploration and international reach.””Jean-Luc Murray, Director General of the MNBAQ
This major project, which is budgeted at $84 million, is made possible by a unique partnership between the Government of Québec, the MNBAQ, and the Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation.
Following an architectural competition that ran from March to August 2022, a jury chose Québec firm Les Architectes FABG to design the Espace Riopelle. The concept was developed in collaboration with SNC-Lavalin and LEM experts-conseils.
